Junior Peyton Maxstead isn’t just illuminating Grove City High School’s exterior; he’s sparking joy, community pride, and has created a newly cherished Greyhound tradition. What began as a simple project to brighten campus trees has quickly grown into a highly anticipated event each December featuring 1,200 twinkling lights per tree.
“I wanted to make mornings a little brighter for everyone,” Peyton shared, reflecting on the project’s inspiration. Last year, he decorated three school trees with 1,000 lights each. Encouraged by the warm response from students, staff, and bus drivers, Peyton decided to go bigger this year. “I added 200 more lights to each tree because why not make it even better?”
With the help of a family friend’s bucket truck and with school approval, Peyton brought his vision to life. While the trees shine beautifully during the day, their full magic is revealed in the early mornings and evenings, setting the perfect tone for the school day.

From Idea to Tradition
When Peyton first pitched his idea to Grove City High School principal Mr. O’Shea and GCHS custodian Mike Berry, they thought he was joking; however, once the lights were installed, their impact was undeniable. The decorations have quickly become a beloved feature of the campus, inspiring smiles and conversations throughout the community.

Looking Ahead
Peyton’s dedication extends beyond holiday lights. His passion for giving back to his community fuels his long-term goals. “I want to run for mayor of Grove City or work as a school resource officer,” Peyton shared. “I just want to keep finding ways to make a difference.”
He also hopes his project will inspire students at other schools to take up similar efforts. “It would be great if more schools decorated their campuses. It creates such a positive vibe for everyone.”
Brightening the Future

As he plans to continue the tradition during his senior year, Peyton is already brainstorming ways to make the display even more spectacular. His efforts have also expanded beyond Grove City High School to include decorating homes and trees across the area, demonstrating that one idea—and one person—can brighten an entire community.
So, if you pass by Grove City High School, take a moment to admire Peyton’s handiwork. It’s more than just decoration; it’s a shining example of what happens when creativity, kindness, and a desire to spread joy come together.
As Peyton puts it, “It’s not just about the lights; it’s about spreading joy and fostering community.”
