Norton Middle School’s Jotniel Nazario named to Columbus Symphony Orchestra Academy Program

Norton Middle School (NMS) eighth grader Jotniel Nazario has been named to the prestigious Academy Program of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra as a concert bass instrumentalist.

The Columbus Symphony Academy is an intensive musical training program designed for serious and passionate student musicians with an emphasis on sustaining performance careers for young musicians in underrepresented communities through transformative musical experiences.

Prior to his acceptance into the Academy Program, Nazario had to complete and submit a challenging audition recording to panelists for their review and worked with NMS and Galloway Ridge Intermediate School music/strings teacher Mr. Zachary Koehler to do so. Additionally, he was also interviewed about his passion for music and future plans and beyond the concert bass, Nazario also plays the flute, clarinet, drums, and piano.

In terms of his future plans, Nazario feels deeply connected to his great-grandfather – a former music educator – and would one day like to follow in his footsteps.

“My great-grandfather was a music teacher and I want to follow in his footsteps,” said Nazario. “I have also liked music since I was younger. I want to [eventually] give what I have learned throughout the years to others and help them learn.”

Nazario will next perform with The Columbus Symphony Youth Orchestra’s Chamber Strings group on Tuesday November 5, 2024 in Mees Auditorium at Capital University in an event free to the public. Congratulations Jotniel on this outstanding achievement!
