On Tuesday, March 5 at the South-Western Career Academy’s (SWCA) annual Business Advisory Dinner, the South-Western City School District’s (SWCSD) SWCA administrative team was proud to recognize community partner OhioHealth as its 2024 Business Partner of the Year.

Dating back to last summer, and prior to the start of the 2023-2024 school year, OhioHealth has gone above and beyond to hire, train, and employ South-Western Career Academy (SWCA) students in Work-Based Learning (WBL) placements.

For the Class of 2023

OhioHealth hired eight, graduating Pre-Nursing seniors, who were released unexpectedly from WBL at another system who experienced a Spring budget cut. They also hired one additional Pre-Nursing graduating senior and one Culinary and Hospitality Arts student for a total of 10 hires at the start of last summer.

For the current Class of 2024

OhioHealth hired 11 Pre-Nursing students who started in the Summer of 2023. These students are working at two OhioHealth hospitals now (OhioHealth Doctors Hospital and Grove City Methodist Hospital).

Additionally, OhioHealth expanded their Work-Based Learning (WBL) program to include Registered Pharmacy Technician Trainees this past November. OhioHealth hired six Multi-Skilled Health Registered Pharmacy Tech students as trainees. These trainees currently work in five of their hospitals: Riverside Methodist Hospital , Grant Medical Center, Dublin Methodist Hospital, OhioHealth Doctors Hospital and Grove City Methodist Hospital.

Post-Secondary Advancement for Placements

Beyond invaluable and paid industry experience, WBL placements from the South-Western Career Academy are also the beneficiaries of generous post-secondary education opportunities from OhioHealth.

For eligible students, OhioHealth will directly pay tuition for further schooling (up to $5,250 a year) at applicable colleges and universities within their in-network of 50 preferred institutions. For our student placements, this means that there are no out-of-pocket tuition costs up front at time of enrollment.

Additionally, for the 26 student hires from the Class of 2023 and 2024, should they remain with OhioHealth through four years of college, they could potentially earn up to $548,080 combined in college education benefits paid on their behalf.

On behalf of the South-Western City School District (SWCSD) and the South-Western Career Academy (SWCA), we would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to OhioHealth for their efforts in supporting our students and their pursuit of in-demand careers in the medical field. As the SWCA doubles its Pre-Nursing program for the 2024-2024 with the recently completed facilities expansion project, the district looks forward to more pathways to expand opportunities through this partnership in the years to come.
