At Handshake America’s annual assembly last night, Central Crossing High School (CCHS) was named School of the Year, and five SWCSD student-athletes were celebrated as part of their Class of 2024 honorees.
Handshake America identifies coachable high-school student-athletes with grit and connects them with successful people that help translate lessons from the field to success in life. Their organization prides itself in coaching – not “mentoring” – students to learn the true meaning of success and how they will achieve it with Perseverance, Passion, Positivity, People, and Presence – which includes giving a good handshake!

Congratulations to SWCSD high school students Savannah Hamilton (Central Crossing High School), Mia Bumgarner and Grant Ruffing (Grove City High School), Vaughn Chum and Safourta Bah (Franklin Heights High School) who have been named scholarship winners for the 2024 Handshake America competition.

Central Crossing High School earned the coveted School of the Year award and was recognized for all of their achievements with the organization. CCHS has submitted nominees for the past 11 years, and have entered 48 applications in that time. Out of those years, CCHS has had at least one honoree for nine of those 11 years.

Handshake America creates life-coaching relationships with gritty student-athletes to help them realize their potential for success and inspire them to influence others. Originally inspired by John Wooden’s Pyramid of Success, Handshake America developed its Five Practices (5Ps): Perseverance, Passion, Positivity, People, and Presence.
The Program helps student-athletes leverage their experiences gained through competitive sports to become more aware of the basic elements and definition of “success”.
As program winners students will receive
1. A scholarship toward continued education beyond high school; and 2. An assignment of a Handshake America Coach; and 3. Eight group sessions in one year with other student-athletes and Handshake America Coaches.
